Dr. Samuel Dudley's laboratory focuses on cardiovascular translational medicine in two distinct areas, diastolic heart failure and arrhythmogenesis. The goal is to understand basic pathological processes to facilitate development of novel diagnostics and therapies. The areas of concentration were chosen because significant advances are necessary and because the basic pathology in both cases appears to be increased oxidative stress. The laboratory offers experience in all aspects of concept development ranging from molecular biophysics to human clinical trials. This model has generated novel intellectual property including new diagnostics for stroke, sudden death, and diastolic heart failure. Moreover, we are developing four novel small molecule therapies for each of the focus areas. As an indication of innovation, the current portfolio consists of 21 patents.
